Sports Research Vegan Biotin Organic Coconut Oil Hair & Skin 120 Softgels

SKU: 12131

Sports Research Vegan Biotin provides high-potency biotin (vitamin B7) in a coconut MCT oil base for absorption support. Biotin is essential for healthy hair, skin, nails, and macronutrient metabolism. The vegan certification ensures no animal-derived ingredients in the softgel shell. Each softgel delivers a substantial daily biotin dose. The 120-softgel bottle is a 4-month supply at one daily. Important: high-dose biotin supplementation can interfere with several common laboratory blood tests (thyroid function, troponin for heart attack screening, hormone panels) — inform your healthcare provider you take biotin before any blood work, ideally stopping 24 to 48 hours before testing.

A: Mixed evidence. Biotin deficiency does cause hair thinning and breakage — and supplementation reverses this. However, most people with hair concerns do NOT have biotin deficiency, and supplementation in non-deficient individuals shows little proven benefit. Hair loss is more commonly related to genetics, hormonal factors (DHT, thyroid), iron deficiency (especially in women), protein intake, stress, or scalp conditions. Biotin is one part of healthy hair nutrition but not a magic fix. If hair loss is significant, see a dermatologist for proper evaluation.

A: High-dose biotin (5000 mcg+ daily) can interfere with several common immunoassay-based laboratory tests because many tests use biotin-streptavidin chemistry. Affected tests include: thyroid panel (TSH, T3, T4 may appear falsely abnormal), troponin (could miss or falsely diagnose heart attack), parathyroid hormone, sex hormones (testosterone, estradiol), and others. The FDA has issued safety warnings. Stop biotin 24 to 48 hours before any blood work and inform your provider. This is a significant clinical concern, not just theoretical.

A: Biotin has no established Tolerable Upper Intake — it is a water-soluble B vitamin with very low toxicity. However, very high doses (5000 to 10000 mcg daily) commonly used for hair/skin support are far above the RDA of 30 mcg. Side effects are rare but some users experience skin breakouts. The lab-test interference is the biggest concern with high-dose biotin. If you do not have specific hair/skin concerns or biotin deficiency, lower doses (300 to 1000 mcg) provide everyday adequate intake.
