A: Selenium is a trace mineral that the body uses to produce selenoproteins — most importantly glutathione peroxidase, the master antioxidant enzyme that neutralizes peroxide damage to cells. Selenium also activates thyroid hormones (converting T4 to active T3), supports immune cell function, and contributes to DNA repair. Brazil nuts are nature's richest selenium source — just 1 to 2 brazil nuts provide a full daily dose.

A: Selenium-dependent enzymes called deiodinases are required to convert thyroxine (T4) into the active form triiodothyronine (T3). Selenium deficiency can impair this conversion and contribute to subclinical hypothyroid symptoms. Selenium also reduces thyroid antibodies in autoimmune Hashimoto's thyroiditis in some studies, with 200 mcg/day showing the most benefit. This product's 100 mcg is a maintenance dose; therapeutic use should be guided medically.

A: Selenium is sometimes provided as selenium-enriched yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae grown on selenium-rich media), which is a highly bioavailable form. However, people with yeast sensitivity, candida concerns, or those on antifungal therapy may prefer to avoid yeast-grown supplements. This product uses a yeast-free selenium source for those individuals.
